Julienne (she/they) is guided by the belief that art and stories can serve as invitations into liberated futures.
Julienne is a queer artist and co-founder of Libertroph Magazine, a culture-building project archiving white anti-racist organizing, past and present. Julienne makes art and shares stories that can serve as invitations into liberated futures. Julienne brings over seven years of experience as a narrative strategist at a racial and economic justice nonprofit, where they organized in partnership with city government, data partners, artists, and local community members to build a racially-just world.
In their art and organizing, Julienne seeks to reconnect with their cultural memory as a means of defying the white supremacy that incentivized their ancestors to give up their cultures. Julienne comes from generations of family with roots in New York by way of ancestors in Sicily, Poland, and west Ireland. Julienne's anti-racist practice is largely informed by People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB) and their Undoing Racism Workshop, and Resmaa Menakem and his Somatic Abolitionism practice.
Julienne is most drawn to relational and collaborative work. She enjoys creative partnerships with grassroots organizers and nonprofit groups to create zines, comics and illustrations that uplift racial, economic, disability and healing justice. She is inspired by nature and what it can teach us about reciprocity, organizing, and flourishing.
Julienne lives in Washington DC, where she loves long walks in Rock Creek Park, tending to her balcony garden, and getting to know her neighbors.

Below is the process for One Original Collaborative Graphic Illustration (~30-40 hours of work:
Initial meeting & visioning: We will get to know one another and build a shared vision for the piece. At this stage, I will inquire about: image sizing, color schemes, inspiration or reference photos, what feelings and messages you’d like the art to convey.
Sketches: I will provide 1-3 sketches with proposed compositions and concept descriptions. I will request feedback, and, if applicable, ask you to select your favorite sketch composition for the final.
Final sketch (if revisions are requested): I will share a final sketch that has been updated to incorporate any feedback from the previous stage. Once you approve the sketch, I will add color and detail for the final piece.
Final piece: I will provide the final illustration in the format initially requested!

For organizations and institutions:
I follow Forward Together’s Building Irresistible Movements Best Collaboration Practices for Organizations and Visual Artists and their fee structure for illustrations based on organizational budget. The cost for one original collaborative graphic artwork (outlined in Process above) ranges from $1,000 - 2,500 minimum, depending on organization budget.
For individuals:
For one original collaborative graphic artwork (outlined in Process above), I offer sliding scale pricing of $750 - 2,500.
For projects requiring less than 10 hours and limited collaboration (ie. an illustrated replica of a reference photo), my rate is $50-65 / hour.
Please reach out to me if cost is a barrier. I am open to negotiating compensation, especially when my art may be used in service of grassroots movement-building. I’m also interested in exploring alternate models, like time-banking and trades. Let’s explore together!

I typically allot 4-8 weeks for each commission, but I will accept projects on a much faster timeline with a rush-fee. The process outlined above can be adjusted based on project scale and speed.

Julienne is a visionary who is as interested in how art is made as she is the product of art. Working with her was like stepping into a portal. The participatory process she led me through was transformative.

Julienne was an integral part of our recent art-focused event. Not only did they showcase their creative talents during the live stream, but they also provided participants and our client with meaningful insight into creating art centered around the theme Health is Life.
